GOLF
With around 50 courses along the Costa del Sol coastline, the
visiting golfer is completely spoilt for choice. Many of the
courses are hilly, some requiring a buggy for any but the super
fit, however there are also a good number of fairly flat
parkland courses. The courses at this end of the Costa del Golf
tend to be less crowded and better value than those nearer to
Marbella. The area surrounding Duquesa boasts some of the best
golf courses in Europe, Valderama, which hosted the 1997 Ryder
Cup, as well as the American Express Match Play Championships,
is only 15 minutes away, other top class Golf Courses include
Sotogrande, San Rogue, Real Club du Golf and La Canada.
Estepona Golf Club is less than 10 -minutes away and an another
15 minutes away are many further courses including Aloha, Los
Naranjos, La Quinta and Las Brisas.
La Duquesa
Completed in 1985, La Duquesa Golf and Country Club surrounds
the El Hacho beacon hills with spectacular views over the Med,
Gibraltar and onto Africa. The course is not flat and therefore
is a little challenging for the beginner, however it’s still
most enjoyable overlooking the Mediteranean, with views across
to Gibraltar and North Africa. The course is less than 50m from
the apartment, it’s facilities include a 19 bay driving range
and two putting greens, lessons are available for all standards
of players. Other facilities include showers, gym, sauna,
jacuzzi, tennis and squash courts
18 holes, par 72, 6142m
Valderrama
Hosting the 1997 Ryder Cup and the World Golf Championships in
1999, some golfers rate the course as the best in Europe. In
addition, it’s only a 15 minute drive from your apartment. This
course must be played, it can be difficult to book, so get in
early and experience the beautiful fairways, those challenging
par 5s, the super fast greens, you must experience Valderrama.
18 Holes - Par 73 - 6234m
Sotogrande
Not quite as well known as Val, Sotogrande opened in 1964, it
still today maintains it’s reputation as one of the top European
courses. Again another immaculate course, palm lined with much
water to play over on the back nine, its one to play and then
retire to Sotogrande marina and enjoy the atmosphere of a
different marina to Duquesa
18 Holes - Par 72 - 6298m
San Roque
Designed by Dave Thomas in1990, the San Roque Golf Club has been
the venue for a number of European Championships. The course
with its wide fairways is always immaculately kept, you’ll enjoy
the woodlands throughout the course with 100 year old cork trees
across the first nine. The back nine enjoy a lot of water, with
many different streams and waterfalls, especially 12th and 18th,
these enhance its beauty and magnatism. Great golf at any level,
however different again from the other courses, the Club House
and hotel was originally an Andalucian mansion.
18 Holes - Par 72 - 6440m
Alcaidesa
The course designed by Peter Alliss is a links course with the
most spectacular views of Gib and the Atlas Mountains in Africa.
This one again is a little different with sand dunes, ponds and
deep bunkers and heather make Alcaidesa a lovely coastal course
with its own personality.
18 Holes - Par 72 - 5671m
