Casares

The beautifully traditional Spanish village Casares with its white washed period cottages and panoramic views is a must for the committed sightseer and photographer and is only a 20-minute drive inland. Through history Casares has been inhabited by many different civilisations.  Walk along the narrow, cobbled streets with their Moorish design, the Arab Castle at the top of the hill has spectacular views, walk through the town square and see Spanish women go about their normal business cloaked in black shawls, men socialising in cafes, its like being in a time machine. Village shops are full of local produce, pottery and leatherwork intermingled with small bars and cafes.  There is also a museum with artefacts dating from the Roman times when the town had it's own mint and Roman baths, these where built under order from Caesar, as the sulphurous waters in the area had cured him of a skin complaint after bathing in the them.
